As Britain’s temperature pauses at a shiver-inducing low, there’s just one thing on our minds: escape. New Zealand‘s colour-rich countryside and sweeping coasts are calling to us. With that in mind, our ‘Hotel of the week’ spotlight has cast its glitzy glow upon The Spire, in Queenstown.

Style Urbane sophisticate
Setting Charming church-side lane

Why this week? Take advantage of the Spire’s current boutique hotel offer: stay three nights – pay for two (you’ll need to be a Smith member, though).

Our favourite bits? In every spacious suite, king-size beds, luxe linens, stone-clad fireplaces and large private balconies are enhanced with carefully chosen design classics by Eames, Starck and co, as well as one-off artworks by contemporary New Zealand talents. We especially love Room 6 for its pretty views of the church spire that gave the hotel its name. The Inspire Champagne & Wine Bar, just by the lobby en route to the restaurant, specialises in seductive champagne cocktails.

Mr & Mrs Smith say ‘The Spire is located in the very heart of New Zealand’s all-season adventure capital and it is the town’s chicest retreat, discreetly hidden in a narrow lane, behind a stacked stone façade. Delivered to the door, what bags we had were whisked away, and we stepped into the Spire’s cosy foyer to be met by Mel, Jan’s partner, the hotel’s general manager. Mel exuded courtesy and warmth and – that universal sign of all useful people – proffered hard news. She knew where my bag was (before the airline did, I suspect), had made arrangements for it to be on the earliest flight the next day, and had also planned how to keep up morale until it arrived…’
